The Fallacy of Rights
You have the right to remain silent, please exercise it! People these days throw around the phrase "it's my right to....." so flagrantly it kills me. Ya know what? You're wrong, they're not rights! They're wishes and wants, desires and hopes, but not rights. Neither natural or legal. You have the right to vote, the right to assemble, the right to petition, the right to a speedy and public trial and the right to free speech. These would be political rights. You do not have a right to collectively bargain. There is actually a document you could refer to if need be. The first ten amendments to the Constitution make up the Bill of Rights. I was unable to establish under which right, after a fair and impartial election, legislators in the minority could bring government to a screeching halt by leaving. You do have a right to unionize, but along with that comes the right to not be forced to unionize, such as public employees in Wisconsin are. If you're so confident in your union, give everyone a choice whether or not to join. Albeit a small minority, there actually are people (teachers, secretaries, sanitation workers, etc.) who would rather have the extra money in their pockets as opposed to their union bosses who in return funnel it directly back to the people sitting across the bargaining table from them. Whew! Just remember, the next time you hear someone, or catch yourself saying it's your right to do this or that, think about it. A great number of people have given their lives for the rights we enjoy today, none of which include the crap going on in Madison Wisconsin these days. As the chocolate Jesus himself said "elections have consequences", and "we won, deal with it". These are wishes and desires, not rights.
